Trance Mediumship: The Voice Within

Microphone

The Voice Within

I have been teaching trance mediumship for over 15 years, and one question gets asked time and time again – “What can I do to help my trance work outside of class?”. Often, students are looking for a book recommendation; sadly there are not many. Instead what they get from me is to work on your voice!

Trance mediumship is, for the most part, a spoken form of mediumship, with Spirit using our vocals cords, larynx, mouth and tongue to produce sound  – specifically a voice that is distinct and their own. Including an accent, speech pattern, tone and of course, vocabulary. However, also VOLUME!

Don’t be afraid of your own voice

Regularly students are afraid of the sound of their voice. Public speaking e.t.c fills them with dread. Even though, technically, it is Spirit speaking and not you, your anxiety is a barrier or block Spirit have to overcome. Afterall they want to talk to people in groups or individually; it is essential to the work.

So, practice public speaking or at least speaking out loud and LOUD! On the stage, it is called PROJECTION, the ability to be heard at the back of the auditorium from the stage without shouting.  It is a useful skill for trance mediums, especially in today’s world where we have to contend with louder background noise than our predecessors. Increasing the volume without shouting is about your lungs and breathe.

Learn how to breathe or take up singing. Singing using many of the same muscles and is something you can do alone or join a choir (which is also great fun). It will help with stamina, breathing and being less intimidated by the sound of your voice.

Give your voicebox and workout

Your vocals, larynx e.t.c need using. Practising toning or chanting can help to strengthen them and make them more flexible; this will assist Spirit is producing a sound close to their own voice, or at least with more distinction, so it is obviously not your voice.

Remember also to work the facial muscle as they also help with the producing sound. So, yes, you will pull some silly faces, but it does help. Try – Do, Re, Me ….. e.t.c opening the mouth wider and increasing the volume. It is an excellent exercise to limber up the voice.

Let’s not forget the chakra

Spirit will use the physicality of the cords, mouth e.t.c to produce sound but before that, they will connect to your throat chakra. If that is blocked, then the work will be blocked too. It is essential to clear the throat chakra (well of all them in fact) and be able to expand it for trance work.

You can work with your chakras alone and at your own pace. Breathing with the chakras is a lovely place to start. Feeling and visualising, the breath flowing in and out of each chakra. You can move on from that to allowing the breath to push out any energy blocks in the chakra (remember to ask your Guides to take away whatever you release).

Likewise, practising opening and closing your chakras and aura (without working in between) to get used to the feel of it, build stamina and confidence. You need to know when you are open and expanded enough for trance work. It also gets your energy use to being expanded and contracted again.

Finally, stamina

I have used the word a few times in this piece, and it might seem an odd choice. However, it is very relevant. Trance mediumship is physically demanding. It might look like I am sitting in a chair doing nothing but that is not the case. The blending with Spirit takes energy; holding them here takes energy. Moreover, it burns through water, vitamins, minerals and other substances in your system at a physical level.

It can affect the chemical balance in the body such as hormones and metabolism. Historically, lots of trance mediums were also diabetic. Today, we understand the body more and can take better care of ourselves and our bodies. For instance, you may notice after a demonstration I drink a lot of water to rehydrate.

Never forget that trance is physical mediumship, your body is the vessel for Spirit. Part of our job is keeping it in good shape as well as making it a good fit.

Who are you talking to in Spirit?

IMG_2531

If I asked you who you prayed to, you give me a clear and direct answer. But when I ask people who they talk to in Spirit, the answers are mixed, to say the least. Often people are vague about it or give really specific names yet when questioned they don’t always know who they are or why they are talking to them. The answer is usually “I was told to” or “I read it in a book”.

Religion gives you clearly defined deities and structure, prayers to follow or guidelines on how to address your god. But spirituality seems to be a free for all. Ask this being for this or that, or don’t ask them and try these instead. Differing opinions and ideas. So how do you work it out, who do you talk to?

Like religion, it needs belief. Who do you believe in? There is no point talking to a being you don’t really believe in or don’t understand. They have to resonate with you. Some people love the idea of Angels but others don’t, some want E.T and others don’t. Spirit is Spirit. These titles are just descriptions or in some cases labels to help us relate to them. If it sounds fanciful to you, you won’t be able to connect as the critical mind will interfere and so it should.

Spirit step forward in many guises to ensure there is something we can all relate to and believe in. Think of it like going into a shoe shop – which pair are you drawn, do they fit when you try them on, are they comfortable? You won’t leave the shoe shop with any pair the assistant handed you just because they think you should have them, but people do when it comes to talking to spirit.

When you want to talk to spirit start at the beginning – Your Soul. It is, after all, a piece of spirit that is within and its guidance is direct and to the point. It knows more about you and your life than anyone else. Next, talk to your Spirit Guides. There are three who are with you from birth to death – Main Guide, Doorkeeper and Guardian Angel. There’s that Angel word again and it is there for those who believe in Angels more than any other spirit. Your Main Guide oversees your life, supports you and supervises all other spirits who work with you. They have had human experiences so can relate to what you are going through. Your Doorkeeper is about protection, they are your bodyguard; mainly for the unseen and energetic. Your Guardian Angel supports the other two and can do their duties if you only connect to Angels, as well as helping you with spiritual ideas and concepts. Other Spirit Guides come and go throughout your life helping out with particular experiences or things that you do in your life such as healing or mediumship.

If you need something more or different then you have access to the countless other spirit beings that exist. We’re back to the shoe shop again – but this time think of a warehouse full of shoes, how do you find the right one? Firstly, type – court shoe, trainer, boot; then colour, size e.t.c Spirit are no different. Type – Angelic, Ascended Master, Loved One, Communicator, Teacher, Healer and so on. Some of these have had human lives (Ascended Masters and loved ones for instance) and some have not (Angelic beings). Having had a human experience may not be important to you but give it a moments thoughts … would understanding what it is to be human be helpful when it comes to giving you guidance and assistance or not.

Think of it like this – your car has broken down at the side of the road and two people stop to help you – a monk and a mechanic – which are you going to choose? You would thank the monk for stopping but you would ask the mechanic to help. Spirit is no different. Some things suit some beings better than others. For instance, I wouldn’t ask the Angels what was wrong with a car, but I do occasionally ask them to help me find a parking space.

There are lots of books about Angelic beings and Ascended Masters – have a look through them. You don’t need to read them cover to cover, you can use them as a reference and see who you are drawn to. Pick one Spirit being and get to know them. Talk to them, work with them, build a relationship with them. This isn’t networking where you have the names of a lot of people just in case they can one day do something for you. This is more like friendship, real friendship, where you communicate with each other, respect each other and trust each other.

Of course, you can have a relationship with several spirit beings, just like you have lots of friends. And, just like making friends, it takes a little effort but it is well worth it.

Trance Mediumship: To prepare or not?

Tealights

Being a channel for Spirit is a gift. However, it also needs to be taken seriously and respected as you would any professional job. This starts with training and dedication but also your mindset as to how you see yourself within the work.

One thing that fascinates me is the odd mixture of approaches when it comes to preparing yourself to work in an altered state. It ranges from the INSTANT FIXERS who basically close their eyes and Ta Da; to the other end of the scale with RITUAL DEVOTEES who have so many rituals to do I am amazed they can remember them all.

Society is pushing more and more for the INSTANT, QUICK, IMMEDIATE but that should not apply here. Working with Spirit needs time and deserves time. Not only for Spirit but for yourself. It is an act of respect. However, the other end of the scale with all the rituals seems to stem from a place of fear or habit. If they haven’t done everything in the same order it won’t work. This shows a lack of trust in themselves, spirit and process itself. But both of these extremes are learnt so teachers need to be aware that they can pass on their anxieties to students as well as their complacency.

When you work professionally as a channel you refine the process each time you work, streamlining it and challenging it to ensure you get the best working conditions. But I would not teach that refined method to my students; they need to build their own. As a teacher, it is important that I give my students the understanding of the mechanics, ethics and purpose so they can carve their own path.

I love to cook. Cooking requires method, precision, science and creativity. Once you understand how eggs cook you can then create many wonderful dishes with them. It is about how you choose to put the ingredients together. But you need to know what the ingredients are first.

With channelling and trance mediumship it is about understanding the energetic reality of the exchange and the nature of Spirit. Building a safe foundation from which you can safely step aside, handing your body and mind over to a Spirit Being. Here is where your preparation is key. Getting yourself into the right space – both figuratively and literally.

I was once asked to channel something during a meeting in a busy cafe; clearly, they had no concept of what trance mediumship was. But the look on their face when I said no was priceless. They had no understanding at all about how ridiculous their request was. They were of the INSTANTANEOUS group and were use to people performing for them.  Moreover, I suspect they were not used to people saying no.

Being in the right space includes location. In that instance I was not in a safe or practical place to work and would have been left myself very vulnerable had I played their game and performed. I would also have been doing Spirit a disservice. There’s a time and place for these things. We need to take the SPECTACULAR out of the vocabulary and put this work back into the right vibration and intention.

Spirit does not step forward to speak for your amusement, they do so to convey truly important information and healing to assist us in growing and being all that we can be. The gift is in the message not in being chosen to deliver it. We are chosen to act as channels as part of our own learning about responsibility and balancing ego. The notion of gift can inflate or suppress an out of balance ego.

Training can only take you so far, the rest of the way is up to you and your own personal development and duty of care to yourself. I hold the work in my hands like a precious thing and as such do not want to squander it but that can also lead to suffocating it – I am mindful of creating a balance. A point of centred harmony.

Preparation should be approached in the same way – what do I need and what does Spirit need. And, above all remember not to become a slave to it; preparation should not be control – you should. The INSTANT verses the overly RITUAL are only extremes – aim always to walk the middle path; that is the balanced road and the true path.

White Light? Is it the right light?

Prism

White light: the universal panacea of the spiritual movement. It can do all and everything! Well, maybe not.

Like many spiritual concepts and tools, it can get overused, misused or be lost in translation. Don’t get me wrong it should be in your spiritual and energetic toolbox but use it wisely.

Firstly, what is it? And here comes problem number one. Different people see it as different things. Hence the word universal in the opening line. Ask yourself what is it to you, do you even know? Are you, in fact, using it because someone else told you to.

For me, white light is a definite energy. It comes from and is part of the Spirit realm. Please note, the Spirit realm and the Universe are two different things. The Spirit realm is the plane of existence where your Soul comes from and will return to. It is pure energy, with no matter. This is where Spirit resides in pure conscious energetic form.

White light is the substance that binds them together, exists in space between them and is of them. Their collective energy if you like. It can be sent by them to assist us. Or we can call it in as we are part Spirit. White light is pure and clear.

We can use white light for healing, clearing, expanding or as part of the opening up process. As the prism shows, white light can be split into various colours. This is what it does when healing but in reverse, where it brings dis-harmonious energy back into alignment as one harmonious energy.

Common misuses of white light

1. Protection

I often come across people who are protecting themselves with white light. Surrounding their aura with it. However, the is not protective. In fact is can create the opposite effect. Negativity is attracted to the light, not repelled by it. A bit like a moth to the flame. If you want to use a coloured light for protection try dark blue. My favourite visualisation and the one I share with my clients and students is to imagine the outside of your aura as mirrored (think 1970’s Disco Ball). Negativity is reflected away from you by the mirror.

2. Grounding

Often students use white light when they are grounding – seeing their roots as white, or the energy of Mother Earth as white or indeed even bringing white light down from the Spirit through the crown chakra and then into the Earth. White light is weightless. When we use the word Light it is in both senses of the word – luminous and weight. Where white light is faster moving than we are it can, in fact, unground you rather than ground. I encourage my students to consider their base chakra also known as the root chakra – what colour is it? Red. It is called the root chakras as this is the where you ground from. Therefore, using the colour red for your roots and the energy of Mother Earth coming back into you is more grounding than white.

3. Crown Chakra

Another problem I find is that students don’t know the colours of the chakras. Many times they say their crown chakra is white. No, it is violet. When you envisage your crown chakra as white you are in effect over stimulating it which can lead to you being too open and struggling with clarity. If you look at the colours of the chakras there is a logical order – based around how colours merge – Red & Yellow makes Orange, Yellow & Blue makes Green, Blue & Violet makes dark blue – think back to the prism.

Some good uses for white light-

1. Washing through your aura

2. Washing through a chakra (or all of them)

3. Cleansing a space or object

4. Balancing your own energy (for instance you have too much physical energy or red energy and need to lighten up).

5. Cleansing and charging crystals

6. Lifting the mood in a room or space where it has got too heavy

White Light is a combination of all colours, as we see colour. Don’t forget all the other colours; they are equally useful and potent. Blue and Green are very healing and calming. Pink can help with giving and receiving love (especially for self). Yellow can strengthen your free will and confidence. Orange can assist with emotions and creativity. Violet is good for Spirit communication.

When cleaning your chakras using the colour associated with that chakra is often more suitable than using white. Remember white is very fast moving and can create expansion. Your chakra might need calming rather than stimulating. When grounding you might brown for your roots more soothing than red, especially if you are very connected to nature.

We live in a world of colour. So don’t be monochrome when working with Spirit and Spirituality. We are Spirit but we are also human and our body is physical matter. Physical matter resonates with colour. If we overuse white light we will run the risk of devaluing it or neutralising it. We can become complacent.

Keep white light in your toolbox along with all the other colours. Use your own instincts as to what colour to use. Ask your Spirit Guides or Soul if you are unsure. Then when you do use white light it will be all the more poignant.

Trance Mediumship: Creative

Creative concept with vintage letterpress

I am always surprised by how old-fashioned people’s thinking is when considering trance mediumship. Oh, how the world view has become limited.

Traditionally all communication from Spirit was via trance, whether that was philosophy, automatic writing, physical phenomena or proof of survival. However, today, trance is seen in a very limited way and often shrouded in fear and misinformation. Spirit are “trailblazers” always looking to be on the “cutting edge” of what is possible with the consideration of what we need as a people. As we advance in knowledge, technology, beliefs and evolution, Spirit is right there beside us doing the same with how they communicate and connect with us.

Trance mediumship as a subject and tool is very diverse and has the potential to expand even more, should we allow it. For instance, the Spirit Communicators have changed and now speak from many levels of understanding; they may have had a human experience or not. They are stepping forward to give words but these can be spoken, written, sung or even delivered a Soul level that only the Soul can hear.

In the past, Spirit communicators were often Native American Indians, Chinese Sages or Individuals who had a human life. But now we are seeing more Collectives and beings who have not had earthly lives. Of course, some of this is being driven by ego and human manifestation but it is also a fact that Spirit has changed how they work with us. More communicators are stepping forward.

I have both a Chinese Sage (Master Chou) and a Collective (The Oracle), they were definitely chalk and cheese when I first started working with them. That difference is now less, as my work with Master Chou has changed and grown. It is a privilege to work with such diverse energies. Likewise, the Spirit beings who work with me for trance healing are many and seem to cover many levels and vibrations and decide who is healing based on the client’s needs.

There is much about energy and spirit we still do not know, and Spirit loves to experiment. This is not about recreating the old but creating new and exciting ways of working and delivering information. As the human populations grow, so our need for more options and different ways increases. The idea of “something for everyone” is at the core of how Spirit works. As a vessel, channel and teacher it is part of my role to help create, by allowing Spirit to experiment and encouraging my students to not limit the potential.

Exciting times lie ahead for Spirit communication, but it is up to us to allow it and go with the flow.

Spirit Guides

Who a I

I am often asked about Spirit Guides,  so I thought I would answer a few of the more common questions:-

Q: Do I have Guides

A: Yes, everyone does. It doesn’t matter if you believe in Spirit or not, they are still with you.

Q: Who are they

A: A Spirit Guide is a Spirit Being who has agreed to walk with you through this life for the purpose of guiding you and assisting you in staying on the path with what your Soul is here to do.

Q: Is my Loved One one of my Guides

A: I believe that Loved Ones are not Guides. Though they may assist your Spirit Guides in assisting you, they act as your Loved One.

Q: How many do I have

A: Everyone has three permanent Guides who are with you from birth to death. They are your Main Guide, your Doorkeeper and your Guardian Angel. You then have Guides who come and go depending on your needs – for instance, a Guide may step forward to assist you with a particular problem or situation in your life and once that is resolved or finished they step away again. Likewise, those of you who develop mediumship or healing skills will have Guides who work whilst training and when you are working professionally.

Q: What do they do

A: Your Main Guide oversees your entire life – they also supervise all the other Guides and Spirit Beings who step forward to help you or work with you. Your Doorkeeper is your bodyguard keeping who protects from unseen problems and energies. Your Guardian Angel doubles up with your Main Guide and Doorkeeper for those of you who are more comfortable connecting to an Angelic vibration rather than a Spirit one. They all work in tandem with each to support you.

Q: Can I ask them for help

A: Yes, but be mindful of what you are asking. Spirit Guides cannot tell you what to do, they can point you in the right direction or give you inspiration. They often do this through thoughts, songs, signs, symbols, white feathers and so on.

Q: How do I talk to them

A: Simply address your words or thoughts to them and they will hear you. You can also ask them to answer through a pendulum, oracle or tarot cards or spiritual tools such as a book like “The Book of Answers” by Carol Bolt.

Q: What do they look like

A: Whatever you need them to, or something befitting the role they are taking for you. For instance, a Doorkeeper might appear as a Warrior, a Healing Guide might appear as a Doctor and so on.

Q: Do they have names

A: Spirit does not need or use names as we but of course they will give you a name if you need one. Ask them to give you a name and then wait for the inspiration – trust what you get.

Should you want to build a better relationship with your Guides then there are plenty of courses and workshop run on this topic and lots of books dedicated to it. You can also use visualisation to meet them.

Trance Mediumship: Who’s Speaking

Doorkeeper

When working with Spirit in an altered state it is important to know “Who is speaking to you and through you”. It’s interesting that students often doubt that it is Spirit and not their mind more than they worry about who the Spirit is and is their intention right. Working in an altered state is a wonderful tool for Spirit communication but as the vessel, you are responsible for what is said – so be sure about who is saying it.

Now that doesn’t mean what is their name as Spirit generally only use names to make things easier for us. But you should be certain that they are Spirit and what their agenda or purpose is. Students who come to trance training have often missed out on building a relationship with their Guides. This is vital to working safely and responsibly. They are there to support you, protect you and guide you.

We are always aiming to be a clear channel for Spirit and that requires us to reflect on our intentions, expectations and beliefs with regard to Spirit (as I have written about before). Having a good relationship with your own Guides gives you perspective and a foundation on which to build a relationship with a Spirit Communicator. Your first step should be your Doorkeeper – they are your bodyguard/protector from the unseen or energetic.

Having clear boundaries with your Doorkeeper about what you will and won’t accept, and, who can and can’t step forward gives your connection to Spirit a formality that is needed for professional work. Remember you can always change the boundaries later as you become more comfortable with the work and Spirit. However, if you have no boundaries any energy can approach you and claim to be Spirit even when they are not.

Be clear about what you are allowing and why don’t be fooled by flattery and glorification – Spirit will speak to your soul needs not your ego. Get to know your own Guides, especially your Doorkeeper and have a clear sense of how Spirit sound and their behaviour towards you and others. If you have doubts act on them, get advice from a professional and challenge Spirit yourself.

They need to earn your trust as much as you need to earn theirs. Your Doorkeeper is your best ally, keeping you safe as best they can. Remember to give them permission to do more and ask for their protection especially when working with Spirit. Be responsible. (If you do not believe that there is anything that you need to protect yourself from, then that belief acts as your protection.) Protection is not only from negative forces it is also from influences that are not for your highest good.

Get to know your Guides, your trance work will be better for it.
